Three more farmers commit suicide in Odisha on Thursday

Baldeb Barik of Keseipalli village under Loisingha block of Bolangir district committed suicide by consuming pesticide, after his crops on five acres of land were damaged due to scanty rainfall.

Another farmer, Ugrasen Mahananda from Khatkhatia village under Kantamal block of Boudh district also committed suicide because of crop loss and loan burden.

Third victim, Dhanu Champia of Balisamla village near Salepur in Cuttack district died on thursday after battling for life at SCB Hospital for the past three days.

The districts from where farmer suicides had reported so far include Nawarangpur, Ganjam, Nuapada, Bolangir, Sambalpur, Jharsuguda, Balasore and Cuttack. Farmers suicides in Odisha raises to 19 during the past four weeks and a majority of them belonged to Western Odisha. Till now as many as eight farmers have taken their lives from Western Odisha.

Farmers’ leaders from different parts of the State under Utkal Rajya Krushak Sabha (URKS) staged demonstration. Naveen Patnaik's Government have to take some immediate steps to save the farmers from drought situations and protect their life.
